# What is Web 4.0?

Web 4.0 — the Independent Internet — is infrastructure you own: self-hosted, mesh-connected, and post-quantum secure. Here's what it means and why it's buildable today.

## You shouldn't have to rent the systems you depend on

Every era of the web so far was built *for* someone else — universities, then the data brokers who turned your attention into a market, then the AI that reads everything you publish. Each added an axis. None added the one that matters most: **control of the compute, the network, and the data underneath.** That is the axis Web 4.0 closes.

**Web 4.0 — the Independent Internet — is infrastructure you actually own.** A resilient, self-hosted internet that people and organizations run and control themselves: decentralized, private by design, and secured for what comes next. No corporate gatekeepers. No surveillance. No lock-in.

## The web, era by era — Read. Write. Own. Control.

- **Web 1.0 · Read.** The static web, built for universities. Stable, verifiable pages with a small attack surface.
- **Web 2.0 · Read-Write.** The dynamic web, built for data brokers. Participation arrived — and companies deploying it to watch you turned personal life into raw material.
- **Web 3.0 · Read-Write-Own.** The semantic web, built for AI. Ownership of assets through blockchain and machine-readable data — but not of the infrastructure underneath.
- **Web 4.0 · Read-Write-Own-Control.** The Independent Internet, built for you. Control of the compute, the network, and the data underneath — the axis every prior era left open.

## How it works — the key technologies

None of this is speculative. Every piece is production technology, deployed today.

- **Self-hosted — you hold the keys.** Your workloads on hardware you own, on-premises or at the edge. Be your own service provider.
- **Mesh networking — no single point of failure.** Peer-to-peer connections (LoRaWAN / Meshtastic) route around damage, outages, and gatekeepers.
- **Post-quantum — secure for what comes next.** Cryptography that survives quantum attacks, modeled on the US DoD's NIPRNet / SIPRNet segmentation discipline.
- **Offline-first — runs on limited power, or none of the grid.** Energy-efficient systems that cache locally and keep working with intermittent connectivity or no uplink at all.

## What it stands for — the six principles

- **Trustless** — cryptographic verification, no trusted intermediaries. You don't have to trust us; that's the point.
- **Ownership** — complete control over your digital assets and infrastructure. No revocable licenses.
- **Safe** — airgap-first nodes, on-premises data, modern encryption.
- **Ethical** — federated nodes, accountable to the communities that run them.
- **Equitable** — equal participation regardless of background or resources.
- **Sustainable** — local processing that cuts energy waste and latency.

## You can run on it today

The building blocks — self-hosted services, mesh networking, post-quantum cryptography, airgapped nodes — are production technologies, not prototypes. AP0110 designs, builds, and hands over Web 4.0 infrastructure that organizations own outright, with no lock-in.

The full thesis is developed in the open at [AP0110.ORG](https://ap0110.org/web4/) — a synthesis of six decades of research, from Licklider and Engelbart through Berners-Lee to Nakamoto. The internet is heading here; the work is getting there first.
